Confession

Julie and Kelly argued on a plan of action all the way home. Julie wanted to go straight to the police and let Franco handle everything. Kelly wanted to get Georgie and her things out of the house first. After Morris's show of anger the other night, she wanted to be safely out of his reach before he found out she had talked to Franco.

Julie dropped Kelly off at home before taking the LTD back to the dealership. They agreed to meet back at Julie's house in an hour, but that wasn't to happen. Kelly was still calling around to Georgie's friends trying to locate him when Morris slammed through the front door.

"Kelly! Get out here, woman!"

Kelly dropped the phone back on the cradle and looked for a place to hide but there was nowhere to turn. Morris loomed through the open door into their bedroom. She froze where she sat on the edge of the bed. She kept telling herself Morris didn't know she was spying on him, and if she played it cool, she could still get out.

"I was on the phone." She hoped she looked calmer than she felt.

"Who were you calling?"

"I was looking for Georgie. He isn't home." Why lie when the truth served just as well?

"Yeah, and where have you been?"

"Who said I've been anywhere?" She bit her tongue, realizing how confrontational she sounded but unable to keep the bite out of her voice.

"I do."

"I-- I went to Julie's for a bit is all. Why? Did you need something?"

"Yeah, I need something." Morris slung the reading glasses at her. "I need you to explain how these got in my apartment."

Kelly dodged the glasses.

"Maybe next time you decide to play detective, you should make sure you don't leave any incriminating evidence. What am I saying? There won't be a next time! I let you off at the bar because you were so out of it, you couldn't even recognize your own husband. I let you off when you found the earring in the car, but I can't let you off with putting your nose where it doesn't belong." Morris's voice roared through the house. His eyes became bulging pinpoints on his furious face.

"What do you mean?" Kelly asked, stalling for time. Time for what, she didn't know.

"What do you mean?" He mimicked, "What do you mean? How stupid can one woman be! Geez, I can't believe I've put up with you all these years. If Georgie hadn't shown such promise, I probably wouldn't have."

Tears streamed down Kelly's face as she thought of the danger she had put her son in. "Don't hurt Georgie. He didn't have anything to do with this. It was all my idea."
